Project Outline: Creative Learning, Creative Spaces: Sustainability and Green Education
Project Summary:
An Tobar and Mull Theatre’s initiative, Creative Learning, Creative Spaces: Sustainability and Green Education, focuses on creating sustainable community spaces and programmes that promote environmental awareness and engagement with the arts. The project consists of two key components: the improvement of An Tobar and Mull Theatre’s physical spaces to minimise carbon output and the launch of a Green Education Programme, aiming to foster climate action and community collaboration on the Isle of Mull.
The Key Components of the Green Education Programme include:
• A series of community-based learning sessions focused on the climate crisis, sustainability, and biodiversity. Events will be held twice a month at An Tobar, including talks by local experts, nature walks, and creative activities like community planting.
• Collaborations with local organisations such as Mull and Iona Community Trust and local wildlife tour providers will enhance the programme.
• The programme aims to educate the community on climate change’s impact on the Isle of Mull and engage them in collective, creative action to address these challenges.
Creative Learning, Creative Spaces: Sustainability and Green Education Project Goals:
• To reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption at An Tobar and Mull
Theatre through sustainable building improvements.
• To raise awareness and foster community engagement with climate action and the arts.
• To promote biodiversity, natural heritage, and sustainability in Mull’s local community.
Management:
• Improvements to physical spaces will be managed by Louise Gregory, supported by Rebecca Atkinson-Lord and the wider curatorial team.
• The Green Education Programme will be managed by Andi Stevens, Creative Learning Curator, supported by the wider curatorial team.
Expected Outcomes:
• A marked reduction in carbon emissions. We will benchmark our carbon outputs against previous years to measure this and ensure an ongoing reduction.
• Increased community participation in sustainability efforts through creative, nature-based educational activities.
• Strengthened partnerships between local organisations, businesses, and the wider Mull community.
Green Education Programme Timeframe:
• Planning: Jan 2025
• Start: March 2025
• Finish: October 2025
This project will contribute to building a more resilient, engaged, and environmentally conscious community on the Isle of Mull.
