Vulva Voce
Vulva Voce is a boundary-pushing string quartet blending classical, folk, jazz and techno. They exclusively perform works by women and underrepresented artists, including original and commissioned pieces. Recognised by The Recording Academy, BBC Radio 3 and CLASH, they’ve collaborated with Grammy winners and Glastonbury headliners Ash.
Their debut EP Maddalena is inspired by 16th-century composer Maddalena Casulana, the first woman composer to have a book of her music printed and published under her own name, in the history of western music. Vulva Voce’s original tracks, Luteal and Hysteria, sample Casulana’s melodies, re-contextualising them in jazz, folk, pop and techno grooves. Committed to a more sustainable touring model, the band continues to reduce their footprint and advocate for a greener industry.
“They wreaked havoc with the traditions of the string quartet, performing a mixture of works by sixteenth century lutist Maddalena Casulana (the first woman to ever publish sheet music), and savage originals that infused chamber music with a wild riot grrrl flair.” CLASH Magazine
