Join Dundee-based artist Calum Wallis for a walking and experimental drawing workshop exploring different ways of experiencing and moving through a landscape and creatively interpreting your surroundings. Part of EBBE+FLOW.
The workshop will explore the idea of a rutter/ruter, an early navigational tool pre-dating sea charts, which provided a sensory description of one’s journey, so that another might follow. Rutters might feature the geological composition of a place, the sounds of languages heard, medical recipes, prevailing winds and colour of water. In short, everything someone would need to identify their surroundings to make sure they are precisely following another person’s route.
Participants will each be given a square of canvas and a string by which to drag it on a walk of about an hour around Knockvologan and along the coast. During the walk, the canvas being dragged will pick up traces of each person’s route, and each will bear subtle differences. Participants will also be encouraged to note particular features along the walk that grab their attention.
On returning to the Knockvologan barn, participants will use this walked canvas as a base for a drawn rutter which describes the route, incorporating notable features, words used in conversation, materials found on the walk or anything else which comes to mind.
Canvas, rope and charcoal will be provided. Please bring any additional or preferred drawing materials. No prior drawing experience or skill required.
Participants should come prepared to walk for an hour over uneven ground, bringing appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing, depending on the weather. In the event of wet weather, the workshop will take place at the Knockvologan Studies barn.
The EBBE+FLOW group exhibition is at An Tobar Gallery from 3 September until 18 November 2022, open seven days a week from 10am until 4pm.
