Waves of Change Workshop
Join critically acclaimed artist AlanJames Burns and innovative craftsman Karolina Slup for an exciting interactive workshop experience on Climate Conversations through Art and Technology.
Waves of Change is an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of arts, technology, and well-being. By bringing together sea waves, ink waves, and brain waves, it aims to champion inclusive climate conversations through an innovative workshop experience.
Rooted in the ancient marbling craft of Suminagashi (ink floating), Waves of Change invites people to create mesmerising patterns on water. This meditative process, known for capturing the emotions of its makers, serves as the foundation for a unique exploration of feelings associated with climate anxiety. At the same time, participants will wear a brain-computer interface, specially designed by environmental artist AlanJames Burns, allowing them to visualise their brain waves in real-time. As electric signals from the brain are translated into abstract visuals, participants are encouraged to share their emotions and thoughts on the climate crisis. The project provides a safe and supportive environment for creative expression through words, art, and shared experiences.
The workshop is scheduled from midday to 4pm in 30 minute slots (with a 30 minute break at 2pm). While a maximum of two people can participate simultaneously, a couple of additional tools will be available for individual exploration of Suminagashi practice on its own. This inclusive event invites participants of all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and those experiencing climate anxiety.
Workshop attendees will leave with their unique piece of Suminagashi artwork on paper.
The project is made possible thanks to the support of the Four Nations International Fund and Culture Ireland.
